Each of us faces unique challenges, pain, and utter tragedy. To live as if we have not experienced these things is shallow and superficial. The reality is, you have the power to take control of your circumstances and rise. You are the authour of your story and you are not alone.
Drawing healthy boundaries is more about defining what you need and how you want to be treated than about being rigid. It is saying “I have every right to the space I am taking up” and “I believe we all deserve respect in this situation.”
How many times have ladies gotten messages on LinkedIn complementing their smiles without mentioning their credentials? It is outrageous and it needs to stop. This is 2018, and ladies, drawing boundaries does not make you a bitch.
I am in awe of the majestic sky that has been draped across Regina, my hometown, over the past few days. I seriously cannot get enough of the texture, colour, and shape of them. On Canada Day my family always heads down to the celebrations in front of the legislative building and this year there was some seriously ever-changing weather: from sunny, to windy, to cloudy and ready to rain — the sky danced.
Perhaps it is the fact that I’ve been working on refining my fine art skills in my spare time (A.K.A. time I force myself to invest in my self-development instead of work, family, or friends) and staring at classic paintings in old textbooks, but I’m really fascinated with clouds right now. They bring storms, they take them away, and they decorate the curtain of the sky above us. They reflect light, they cast shadows, and transform our landscape. I feel so blessed to be from the land of the living skies and it is on my goal list to become an expert at painting different cloud formations.
Often, in business, we are surrounded by an ever-changing skyscape. Pressure systems move in, light peeks through, and there are unexpected storms. There is beauty, there is chaos, and there is a whole lot of unpredictability. So what can we do about this? How can we prepare for the unexpected and give ourselves the grace to roll with the changing dynamics?
There are two things I want to encourage you to do if you are experiencing clouds in your business.
VISION - Take Time to Dream
FIND ADVISORS - Seek Outside Wisdom
1. VISION - Take Time to Dream
In 2016 I had the honour of working on the Hillberg & Berk blog, H&B Life. The CEO and founder, Rachel Mielke, talked about living at 10,000 feet. This state of “head in the clouds” is above reality, in a state of vision. It is so important to make sure you stay inspired and looking forward as you build your business.
In university, I had a professor who talked about the magic of fiction as an escape from reality. In my world, dreaming is that fantasy. To be honest, I can’t stand fiction but I spend a lot of time visioning and dreaming about what is, what is to come, and the infinite possibilities of business. There is a lot of my childhood I can’t remember but I can remember the ideas and daydreams I had. I had hopes and dreams, and when times get tough I find that I can snap myself into a state of joy and excitement about visioning what is to come. It is my fantasy.
2. ADVISORS - Seek Outside Wisdom
I know that for me one of the most important things is to do is surround myself with both learning and mentors. This helps me see what is happening now and how I may adjust it. As we navigate business it is important to lean on the peripheral vision that comes from advisors.
Here's a joke for ya..
Have you ever heard the joke about the stinky cheese?
As I remember, it goes something like this:
On a Sunday afternoon my grandpa, who had a moustache he was quite proud of, fell asleep on his recliner. I, being the trickster I am, pulled a tub of stinky cheese out of the fridge and ever so slyly rubbed it into his moustache.
He started to stir, and I hid behind the sofa. “This room stinks!” he said as he pulled himself to a stand. He walked around the house. “This whole house stinks!” He went outside looking for the source of the smell.
The look on his face turned to horror.
“This whole world stinks!”
Sometimes, when we are going along in business we need an outside perspective to let us know where the source of the stink is coming from.
Are you experiencing a hangup that is holding you back from moving forward?
Do you have great sales, but struggle with keeping your profits strong?
Are you missing sales when you know your program or idea is strong?
The problem could be right under your nose.
Let me help you find it.
We are working on making it easier than ever for you to get the help you need in adjusting your strategy and making money. Getting the help you need shouldn’t cost a fortune. This is why we developed our Clarity Sessions.
In a Clarity Session you will get two hours with me where we will talk about what is working, what isn’t, and I will tell you my secret formula for how you can grow an authentic business that is soulful, connected, and MAKES MONEY. In these sessions, I’ve helped people map out sales funnels, re-price their products, and even redo messaging and logos. I can’t promise you the world but I can promise you, I will give you my best.
Your business doesn’t have to stink.
Let’s get clear on where you want to go, and get the cheese out of your moustache.
Are you ready to find some clarity?
There are so many ways to run a business and in my practice, I’ve noticed a lot more of my clients choosing to run what I can only describe as traditional businesses in a soulful way. It is absolutely refreshing. Business is not for the faint of heart. By grounding yourself, digging deep, and taking the time to take care of yourself and fill your soul your business can see a deeper impact and profound longevity.
With Mother’s Day coming and going, I’ve had such a full heart sitting with my own mother and being showered in kisses from my babies (and cleaning up the can of Ginger Ale my four year old dumped all over his head in my van…).
Entrepreneurs have no other option (it seems) then to work hard. We will often spend 16 hour days in the launching of new products or service or to honour the immense responsibility that is payroll and overhead costs. We go on vacations and spend the whole time reading, planning, and answer emails. Hard work and these obsessive qualities are necessary in pioneering stages but there are things you can do to counteract burnout.
When it comes to running a business, recognition is nice. Beautifully styled images are nice. Sales are nice. But when it really comes to growing your business - profitability is KEY. How profitable is your business?
Imagine for me that you are in Inuit land. As far as the eyes can see, there is a blanket of snow covering the icy terrain. You are dressed warmly, and on your feet are leather bound shoes designed for agility as you search for your next kill.
Whether or not you were born into a family who set you up for success and encouraged you to move forward in your life, or into a toxic environment where each move felt like a sabotage on your destiny, you have the power to take your life by the reins and find success.
The most vulnerable place I have ever found myself in is where I speak my truth and risk being disapproved of. Does that resonate with you? Disapproval is a sharp trigger-point for me. I have a tangible need to satiate my self-worth and sense of belonging in other people's opinions.
The other day, I poked around our analytics to see what people were viewing and where they were coming from. It reminded me that when people find Authentically online, they are not only landing on the home page. They are landing somewhere else.
