Are you trying to piecemeal your business together?

Have you been trying to piecemeal your business together? A little here, a little there, a little everywhere. This morning I got up early to do some reading and fold some laundry (thank goodness for audiobooks) and really got to thinking about the reasons why a mosaic of business assets just doesn’t work.

From building what we can ourselves, to finding affordable service providers, the result is often an underwhelming patchwork of services.

When you’re not the expert.

Being in business for ourselves we force ourselves to learn all kinds of things that take hours upon hours of work. This can be a huge drain on energy and resources. Mundane tasks can suck up time you could be spending earning an income. If something makes you squarely or you’re just plain not good at it - it may be time to pass the baton.

When it ends up costing you more.

Have you ever tried to take a round-about approach to develop something for your business? You start with the planning, and then hire a freelancer, and then get hit with unexpected fees from one platform or another, then it all has to be reworked and this costs more. When you’re not sure how to approach something, take the time to look at the strategy and where you may need help.

When it never happens.

We’ve all been there. Well intentioned ideas that drudge on and on and never happen. Have an idea for a product or service that could change your business but never get it off the ground? There are times we need a little push or a unique perspective that will help hit the ground running - before that idea gets trapped scribbled on a napkin, meanwhile someone else executes something similar (the worst!).

When no one can recognize you.

Maybe it is because I’m an artist, maybe it’s because it’s a real issue… have you ever seen a business card that is totally different from a website and an awning over a business. What’s worse, when the sing has one logo and a decal on the window is completely different! The common thread that ties your messaging together is your brand, and if you don’t protect it, no one will recognize you. It really and truly can dilute your messaging.

When you get stuck in a rut.

When we do everything ourselves it can leave us feeling “out of gas.” There is a lot to accomplish in the day to day operations of a business to keep it afloat but the big problem comes when you try to do what you are good at AND everything else. Not only will your deliverables be sub-optimal, but

When you’re ready for the next big thing.

If you’re getting out of a rut and are inspired for the next great venture in your business or have overcome a personal obstacle or barrier for growth you could be ready for the next big thing! When we are ready, an insatiable hunger (that comes along with a nagging buddy, fear) will be motivating you to go hard or go home! When this happens, it is so important to choose the RIGHT methodology for growth.

When you’re lowering prices to keep up with your competition.

When you go out on your own it is easy to look from right to left to see what everyone else is doing instead of keeping your eyes on the prize! We compare apples to oranges, or if we are oranges, we try hard to look like apples… this is a losing game because you will end up undervaluing your work - costing you time, energy, and building resentment. If you want to be angry and out of business, keep lowering your prices. If you’re ready to soar, look for a strategist to help you out of this nosedive.

When your business venture becomes a low paying job.

If you’ve been pricing it all together for yourself, chances are you are working so hard in your business that you are forgetting to take time to work ON your business. On strategy, product development, weeding out what makes you unprofitable and firing the clients who are a poor fit. When you get stuck “in the weeds” of your client’s needs you will find you’re working harder for a lower return - making this worse than having a job. You work you ass off for a feeble return on investment. Didn’t you go into business to find freedom?? No? then what? I bet it wasn’t to be worked to the bone.

Most of us have gotten trapped in piecemeal work, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
