Operating a Blessed Business

Let’s do business differently

There are so many ways to run a business and in my practice, I’ve noticed a lot more of my clients choosing to run what I can only describe as traditional businesses in a soulful way. It is absolutely refreshing. Business is not for the faint of heart. By grounding yourself, digging deep, and taking the time to take care of yourself and fill your soul your business can see a deeper impact and profound longevity.

Never, ever, ever give up.
— Winston Churchill

I’ve been overwhelmed with joy and favor lately, and today, I’d like to take a little turn with you in this blog and go there. Really. Go there. Talk about our spirituality and how it pertains to business. Will you humour me? Can we talk about the role of the divine, Karma the universe, God, goddess, whatever it is to you. There are three main principles that really drive me - besides the relentless pursuit of passion and success.

Work Hard Be Kind Pursue Integrity

Work Hard.
Be Kind.
Pursue Integrity.

I believe that planting these seeds will produce fruit in your life. Sometimes, it takes time to develop - but it will. There is no pill you can take or easy solution to find success, but there are principles that will provide a return on your investment.

Thankfulness, humility, and a whole lot of awe

Throughout my life, I have felt the hand of blessing in an uncanny way. As a child, there was not a lot of money to go around. My dad was a student and did not believe in accumulating debt, and my mother a master budgeter. If I wanted something I either had to earn it, wait for a hand me down, or pray. So I prayed - and everything I needed came to me. In high school, I wanted a new bed. I prayed, and someone asked us if we needed a brand new queen sized bed. That bed got me through high school, university, and early motherhood. In university, I followed my parents precedent paying my way through university in cash - working 30 hours a week and taking full-time classes. There was no extra money and no debt. There was also no computer. I prayed, someone gave me a refurbished laptop that got me through until I could get a new one. This principle has remained true to me in my adult life as well - with everything from the beautiful house I live in, the assistant I needed, the accounts manager that turned my business around, right down to the designer shoes I’ve been gifted. Sometimes, I can’t help well up with thankfulness and humility.

It is no different in my business. Extraordinary opportunities present themselves to me on a regular basis. There is no other way to explain it other than to say it is not natural. It is not all me. Don’t get wrong, I work really hard. I am deliberately kind. I pursue integrity. I am constantly learning and trying new things... but when people ask me my secrets or where I learned what I do the answer is not in the things I’ve done, it is in the things I feel and blessing that pours over me. This is something we are taught not to talk about but I observe in my life a web woven through my personal, my business, and my expressive life working in the background whether I address it or not. It is my connection to a more spiritual understanding of life.

In our lives, there are forces that we see, and forces that we can’t see. We can observe this to be true in everything from the law of attraction, feelings of resonance with certain ideas, and repulsion to others. Even intuition is a spiritual gift - that gut feeling that something is off, or even that something is safe when by all logic it could be deemed otherwise.

At Authentically, we work a lot with neuroscience and the study of how human beings are influenced and it is overwhelmingly true that we make decisions with our feeling selves far more (95% more) than the logical part of our brain (don’t believe me, let’s fight). Some people have a hard time believing this because we think we are so analytical. I’d challenge you to think about the underpinning of your own logic. You already made the choice to buy your last purchase with your attraction to it, and justified it with the reviews… didn’t you? This phenomenon can be explained by psychology and physiology, but there's got to be more.

Some of this is instinct, some of this is intuition. As an artist, I often feel I live between two realms - the spiritual and the natural. In fact, I believe most artists do. We feel deeply. We are deeply passionate. We are looking for deep experiences. We are prone to challenges with relationships, mental health, and addictions. I really do believe it is because we have an ability to see what doesn’t appear to be there. Throughout history, many artists did some really crazy things (Van Gogh and mailing his ear to a lover), suffered from addictions (Jackson Pollock is a perfect example) and passionate love affairs (John Waterhouse and his many muses). We go deep into our feelings and express deeper realities we know to be true, yet can not see. Does it make us eccentric? Yes. Does it shed light on reality? Also, yes.

I love implementing this need for deeper experience into my work in marketing because my desire with my clients is to bring their businesses to a deeply human place where they can make deep, lasting connections with the human people who buy their products or services. If you want something superficial, we aren’t the brand for you. We build authentic brands who care about the people they serve. That is coming from a place of artistry and a longing to connect in a profound way. It sounds a little freaky, perhaps, but I truly believe I draw out ideas from my clients when I sit next to them. I become a vessel, a surrogate of sorts. This is a spiritual gift and not something that can be learned at school. It can be honed and developed as I pursue excellence in my career, but not earned on a certificate. It comes from a place of understanding the human need to know and be known - and a passion to create opportunities for this knowing.

I’m not here to judge you or tell you what to believe. Anyone that knows me on an intimate level knows how deeply I believe in listening and understanding, and having an open heart. I am also not professing to have all the answers. All I know is that I am blessed and there is a hand on my life pouring goodness, mercy, and grace over me as I chase after kindness, integrity, and building others up. Last night, and this morning, I was just filled with such joy I could dance. I want to share some of the principles I see working in the back end of my business and I really want to know what you think. Have you seen any of these ring true for you?

Whatever your beliefs are, wherever you draw your inspiration I want to encourage you to fight hard for your goals, dig deep, and know you are truly never alone. I believe so deeply that by living a life steeped in kindness, diligence, and the pursuit of integrity will bear fruit in your life of unexpected opportunity, joy, and prosperity.

I really want to know...

Where do you attribute the blessing in your life? Are you seeing enough of it? How do you encourage yourself to move towards victory? Let me know in the comments below!
