Getting Clear on Our Business Impact: It's About Instincts.

With Mother’s Day coming and going, I’ve had such a full heart sitting with my own mother and being showered in kisses from my babies (and cleaning up the can of Ginger Ale my four year old dumped all over his head in my van…).

A year ago, my life was in a much different spot. I was building the business of my dreams and getting more comfortable in my skin, empowering others and finding myself. At the same time I was coming alive, my already strained marriage took its final breaths. As a year has passed, I have found more peace and strength in this evolution.

I had to correct myself yesterday when pride bubbled up and said “You’ve done this yourself!” I have not. I have done a lot of it, but I have done it surrounded by the loving kindness of friends, family, and clients. I am not an island, I am a part of an army of powerful, loving people.

I want to encourage you in that today. Our business journey is an uphill climb. It is a dance of balance (what balance?), a pioneering obsession, and a war zone. It is not easy. It is fraught with uncertainty and a need for a burning tenacity that defies logic. It is bliss and exhilaration. It is victories and it is loss. In the midst of it, though, I want you to remember that you are not an island - you are part of an interconnected system of friends, family, and other business people. What you do with those relationships is up to you. It is up to you to protect yourself, to strive for excellence, and to nurture relationships that feed you. Cut out the ones that suck you dry. You have no time to live without boundaries. And if you can find the time, why spend your energy on that?

put on your own air mask, that is.

There’s been so much talk about putting on your own air mask lately - the idea that if you can’t take a breath yourself you won’t be able to help anyone else in your life take a breath either. Think about the moment, however, where the plane is descending. Your child is next to you, eyes wide and scared - and the masks fall. Not a chance in hell I would put on my own mask first if my baby was next to me. It’s not logical, it is instinctual. We are creatures of instinct; that’s why we have to constantly be reminded to put our own air mask on first. You can help more people if you are safe (unless it’s your baby then everyone better get outta the way!).

Did you know that when it comes to making decisions we only make 5% with our logical, most advanced brain? Up to 95% of all of our decision making is influenced by primal instinct and our connection to others. That is so powerful. Only 5% of our brain cares that we should put on our air mask before assisting someone else, but the mama instinct and love for our babies will trump it nearly every time. This is why it is so important to get an outside perspective and be thinking about the physical function of the brain in every business and marketing session we conduct.

In clarity sessions with my clients, we strip away the things that we think our prospects want to hear and get right down to the heart of the matter:

  • What do they need?
  • Where does it hurt?
  • How are they connected to you?
  • How can you be raw, real and vulnerable with them?

This is so essential to building an authoritative brand. You have to understand where your clients are coming from in an almost primal way and how you come into the picture to influence and motivate them. It is not about ego - it is about inspiring real change and building deep connections. I am so over superficiality and consumerism. We are humans selling to humans. It’s core to keep this in your mind.

Who are you selling your products or services to? What is a day in their life like? What are the things that keep them up at night? What are the things that flood their hearts with joy?

Remember, in everything that your business says and does you should be trying to build conversation with your ideal clients. Our ideal clients are human people with human products coming to you for answers.
